Easter Commemoration held in Naas
Republican Sinn Féin in Kildare held their annual 1916 commemoration at the grave of Martin O’Brien in St Corban’s cemetery in Naas at 12 Noon on Easter Sunday. The 1916 Proclamation as well as the Easter Statement from the leadership of the Republican Movement along with statements from the POWs in Maghaberry and Portlaoise Prisons were also read. A decade of the rosary was recited As Gaelige.
In his oration Republican Sinn Féin Ard Chomhairle member Matt Conway said: “We gather here today to remember the men and women who 96 years ago went out to strike a blow for Irish Freedom. The leaders of 1916 gave us the Proclamation of Easter Week. It is upon this historic declaration of the “right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland” that we take our stand, and it is from Ireland’s historic right to nationhood that we draw our mandate. That right to nationhood can never be extinguished ‘except by the destruction of the Irish people.’
“Here we are gathered at the grave of Martin O’Brien, a friend and comrade of the famous Kildare Republican Frank Driver. Martin O’Brien devoted his entire life to the cause of a free Ireland and for him that cause could only be completed when the 1916 Proclamation was made a reality. Martin O’Brien also wrote for the United Irishman paper under the name Conleth Martin. On this Easter day we are proud to remember his service to the All-Ireland Republic.
“For Irish Republicans the 1916 Rising is much more than an historical event, it represents the highest ideals of human and national freedom. While any part of Ireland remains under British occupation or any part of our sovereignty is claimed by an undemocratic European superstate 1916 will remain for us unfinished business.”
Wreaths were also placed on the Republican Plot in St Corban’s cemetery as well as Grey Abbey in Kildare Town. Wreaths were also placed on graves and monuments throughout Counties Kildare, Laois and Carlow.

In her oration Cáit Trainor, Co Armagh, a member of the Ard Chomhairle said:
“Firstly I would like to say what an honour it is to speak at the graveside of such a man as Frank Driver, Its 29 years since Frank Driver passed away and in those 29 years his relevance and inspiration has not waned. Frank Driver was a man of conviction and courage, his long career in the Republican Movement saw some of the Most Important events in Irish History.
“Frank was not a man who sat back and watched History unfold around him, but was indeed part of the making of Irish History, from the start Frank was Hands on, his first service for the Republican Movement began at age of 12 when he was a Tally clerk for Sinn Féin during the Historic 1918 General Election. After which time he was active within the IRA and at age sixteen was interned.
“Frank Driver was a dedicated republican, being active all his Live within Republicanism, in the 40's Frank Driver was instrumental in reorganising the Republican Movement, in the 50's training Volunteers and when he was interned once again in the Curragh camp, Frank was involved in organising a mass break out. Such was Frank Driver that no matter what was threw at him or where he was he always worked to further the Republican Movement, even at times when it seemed Fruitless Frank Worked on such was his resolve.
“We can all learn from the Life of such a man, a man who went through some of the most turbulent and it has to be said disheartening times in Republican History and still right up until his death he never gave up.
“At present we live in a time where determination and dedication are overlooked as outdated and stubborn, that Republicanism is somehow taboo and in our general lives we cant express our patriotism for fear of being seen as Old Fashioned or somehow backward. Well I believe the time of change has come, we now have a chance to speak to the masses and make a difference.
“The Free state economic crisis is an eye opener for many Irish People, the lies the Free state government has fed people have now been exposed, Partition does not work, it has never worked and it never will work. The people of Ireland must have social control of the economy.
“Eire Nua and Saol Nua had never been so relevant, its the only real solution, we have the solution but others just want to focus on the Problem.
“The Myth that the 26 County Free state is Independent and the Myth that the 6 county state being devolved is somehow independent has been shattered, the 6 county state has no autonomy, it relies on the British exchequer and takes instruction from the British in the management of the cuts applied to them, the 26 county state also has no autonomy in directing the economy and instead is ruled from Brussels and the IMF, Neither state is independent and the present economic crisis has made that abundantly clear to everyone. Partition must be abolished, only the Republic envisaged in 1916 by Connolly and Pearse can give Ireland autonomy, independence and real Sovereignty over our affairs politically and economically, and only the Republic envisaged in 1916 can act in the interests of all our people.
“Frank Driver stood by the revolutionary Republican ideas as laid down by the men of 16, these ideas were kept alive by men like Frank Driver in hard times for the Republican Movement, those revolutionary and progressive ideas have been hidden deliberately by self serving politicians and greedy capitalists in our country. It is thanks to Frank Driver and his comrades that the flag of revolution is still being kept alive and we in Republican Sinn Fein are the inheritors of that revolutionary and progressive tradition.
“Having suffered many set backs and misrepresentation by politicians and vested interests out for personal gain and with no regard for the interests of our nation, we have come through and are embarking on a new wave of republicanism that is now being seen as relevant as it always was, and more and more people are rediscovering the truth and relevance of revolutionary Republicanism, Republican Sinn are at the forefront of the revolution and stronger and more united than ever to achieve our goals which is assert the Sovereign independence of our country which was proclaimed on the steps of the GPO 1916.
“Only last week Republican Sinn Féin had a very successful Ard Fheis where many delegates from throughout the Country assembled, it was great to see a unity of purpose, men, women, young and old joined together, there we rededicated ourselves to the work of the republic.
“Until the 32 Counties of Ireland are independent and free we cant settle, we must reaffirm our dedication to have what is rightfully ours and we will not be lax in our efforts to spread the Republican message. Today as we commemorate the life of Frank Driver I wish to appeal to all of us to make a determined effort to fulfill Frank Driver and so many others Life Goal, which is to rid our Country of foreign occupation to support our Revolutionary Movement in whatever way you possibly can. We owe it to the past generations and we owe it to the future generations to Gain Independence once and for all.” Cáit Trainor said.

Frank Driver
Frank Driver was born in Ballymore Eustace in 1907. As a young boy he was in Bodenstown when P H Pearse spoke there in 1913. His first activity on behalf of the Republican Movement was when he acted as a tally clerk for Sinn Féin in the historic 1918 General Election. He was active with the IRA and was the youngest internee in the Newbridge internment camp at 16 years of age.
He went on to give a life-time of service to the Republican Movement suffering imprisonment in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. His last period of imprisonment was in Mountjoy in 1976 for his participation in the banned 1916 60th anniversary commemoration at the GPO.
He played a lead role in the famous raid on the Free State army’s arsenal at the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park in 1939. He was interned in the Curragh from 1940 to 1944. Following the release of the internees and the aftermath of the repression of the 1940s Frank Driver travelled throughout Ireland re-organising the Republican Movement. As J Bowyer says in his history of the IRA “On June 23 1947,at Bodenstown, Frank Driver gave the traditional oration, signifying that the Republicans were back in business. Most important was the Army report, read to the crowd, the first public sign that the IRA still existed.”
In 1956 Frank, with others was responsible for setting up training camps. He was interned again in the Curragh in the 1950s. He was involved in the mass break-out from the Curragh on December 2 1958. Frank remained an active Republican right up to his death on November 12 1981. He was for many years a member of the Ard Chomhairle and was an Honoury life Vice-President of Sinn Féin.

Kildare Republican Sinn Féin will be holding its annual Frank Driver Commemoration in Ballymore Eustace on Sunday, November 21 at 1.pm.
Those taking part will assemble at Driver’s Cottage and parade from there to the grave of Frank Driver at St John’s Cemetery.
The oration will be given by Ard Chomhairle member Cáit Trainor, Co Armagh.

Kevin Barry 90th anniversary commemoration
The Carlow Myles Shevlin/Tony Ruane Cumann of Republican Sinn Féin will be marking the 90th anniversary of the execution of Kevin Barry by the British with a commemoration in Rathvilly, Co Carlow on Sunday November 21 at 3.pm.
The oration will be given by Geraldine McNamara, Co Tipperary.

Republican Sinn Fein, Kildare had a very successful Easter commemoration on saturday. Wreathes were laid throughout the county at the graves of our patriot dead. On Easter sunday the main commemoration was held in Grey Abbey, Kildare Town. It was chaired by Matt Conway, who welcomed everyone. He then called on Paddy Tidd, of the Frank Driver cumann to read the proclamation. Kitty Hawkins recited a decade of the rosary and a wreath was laid on behalf of RSF Kildare. The statement from the leadership was read by Cilla Conway, a statement from the pows in Mahgaberry and Portlaoise was read by Sinon Cahill. The Oration was given by Shane O' Toole, He gave the history of the men buried in the graveyard and reminded us the seven men were excuted by the freestaters in the biggest offical execution of the civil war. Shane said these men were executed for refusing to accept partition. Just as we do today, and saluted these brave men. We want to send greetings and support to the Continuity pows in Mahgaberry and Portlaoise jails who are imprisoned for thier beliefs. The same beliefs the the men of 1916 were executed for. In the last year resistance to brit rule in the occupied six counties has steped up a gear, with attacks against the forces of occupation and long may this continue. We have also seen an increase in the harrasment of republicans, both here in the 26 counties and in the occupied 6 counties. We want to send a cyrstal clear message to the brits, ruc and 26 county special branch that no amount of harrasment or intimidation will stop us in persuing our goals of a 32 county democratic socialist republic. Just as the men and women of 1916 fought and died for. British actions only strenthen our resolve. Adams, McGuinness and the rest of the provo puppets have now become part and parcel of the brit war machine. The administer brit rule through stormount. They have signed up to policing and justice ,thats british policing and justices and we all know about british justice. They are openly asking the nationialist people to inform on true republicans who are keeping alive the struggle for Irish freedom. They brand us as crimanals and traitors, Though it's very clear it is you, martin and gerry who are the traitors.

We in Republican Sinn Fein are the true Sinn Fein, the ones who took all of the republican ideals and stuck with them. We are the true inheritors of republicism and were here to stay. The war against the brits can and must continue until the brits realise they have no future role to play here, only to leave. It's up to us this generation to honour our Patriot dead and finish the job. so many have given ther lives to achieve a 32 county socialist republic based on the 1916 proclamation, but until that day we must be prepared to take the fight to the brits. Not a bullet, not an ounce will they ever get from us. It's our duty as republicans to continue the fight until full freedom has been achieved. Our position is very clear as long as there is a british presence in Ireland there will be resistance to it, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace. Continuity not compomise. Tiocfaidh ar la.

Kildare RSF congratulates Des Dalton
Approximately 100 people attended a successful function in Naas Town House, Co Kildare on Friday, 19th of February. The function was organised by the Kilcullen Cumann and the Frank Driver Cumann North Kildare to congratulate Des Dalton for his election as president of Sinn Féin at last the 105th Ard Fheis last November.
Republicans from Dublin, Wexford, Kildare, Kilkenny and as far as Austria came to congratulate Des Dalton in his new position as leader of the oldest party in Ireland.
Des Dalton from Athy, Co Kildare, is shop steward in his local town, vice-president of his local SIPTU branch and member of the Republican Movement for more than 20 years. Before being elected as president he served as vice-president for many years. He was the republican candidate at the last two local elections in Athy.
Shane O’Toole of the Frank Driver Cumann presented Des Dalton with a framed picture on behalf of Sinn Féin Kildare. He also welcomed former POW Billy Philips from Wexford who was present at the function. Billy was just released from Portlaoise jail.
He announced Ard Chomhairle member Ger Foran who gave a lively speech in which he remembered his first meeting with Des Dalton about ten years ago and stressed the importance of the fight of the Republican Movement nowadays.
Des Dalton thanked everyone for coming, especially the two Cumainn for organising the function. He sent greetings to the republican prisoners in Maghaberry and Portlaoise and once again pointed out that the Republican Movement is the only force to achieve a united Ireland and drive the British Army out of Ireland.
He also stressed the importance of supporting the striking Green Isle workers in Naas and send greetings to them.
The members of Sinn Féin in Kildare want to take the opportunity to thank all who attended, especially Ger Foran for his speech and singer Paddy Sweeney for the great performance during the function.

He sent greetings to the republican prisoners in Maghaberry and Portlaoise and once again pointed out that the Republican Movement is the only force to achieve a united Ireland and drive the British Army out of Ireland.
He also stressed the importance of supporting the striking Green Isle workers in Naas and send greetings to them.
The members of Sinn Féin in Kildare want to take the opportunity to thank all who attended, especially Ger Foran for his speech and singer Paddy Sweeney for the great performance during the function.
Frank Driver Commemoration
On Sunday November 8 the Frank Driver Cumann, North Kildare, of Republican Sinn Féin will be holding its annual Frank Driver commemoration in Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare.
Those taking part will assemble at 12.45pm opposite Driver’s cottage in Ballymore Eustace and parade from there to the cemetery.

Frank Driver Passes into Legend
Staunch, lifelong republican, Frank Driver of Ballymore Eustace, who died last week, was given a funeral on Saturday which will live on in memory.
Frank, who had been in poor health in recent years, was in his late seventies. His whole life was devoted to the movement, and his last big public occasion was in June when he laid the Provisional Sinn Féin wreath at Bodenstown.
A most notable feature of his funeral was the presence of over 100 Gardai and detectives including members of the Special Branch. Some took up duty on all approach roads, and scores flanked the cortege and later encircled the hillside cemetery where he was laid to rest.
The late Mr. Driver was a life Vice-President and former member of the Provisional Sinn Féin Árd Comhairle and a former internee at Newbridge and Curragh. The internment followed Mass in irish concelebrated by three priests, Rev. John Dunphy, C.C Ballymore Eustace; Rev. Myles Christy, Francis Street Church, Dublin, formerly of Ballymore and National H-Blocks Committee Chairman, Rev. P. Ó Duill. Peace and justice were highlights of a brief eulogy by Fr. Dunphy.
Five men and two women in black garb flanked the Tricolour draped coffin during the Mass and a lone piper (Jack O’Connor) walked ahead of the cortege playing laments. The coffin was borne over half a mile on the shoulders of Sinn Féin colleagues and friends. Outside his humble home near the church it halted for a brief period as a mark of respect.
The huge Gardai force was directed by Chief Supt. James Murphy from H.Q. in the local station, and only on occasions of Cabinet meetings in nearby Barrettstown Castle has the village seen so much activity and official transport in use.
The attendance included Ruari Ó Brádaigh, President of Provisional Sinn Féin, Daithi ÓConaill, Joe Cahill, Richard Behal, Joe O’Neill, and the former Fianna Fáil Minister, Kevin Boland.
In an oration in Irish and English at the graveside, where prayers were recited in Irish by Fr. Dunphy, assisted by Fr. Christy, Mr. Ó Brádaigh touched on highlights of Mr. Driver’s devotion to the cause of republicanism and described him as a lodestone to whom all supporters could gravitate.
RSF anti-heroin protest in Newbridge
THE Frank Driver Cumann/North Kildare of Republican Sinn Féin will be holding an ant-heroin protest in Rosconnell estate in Newbridge, Co Kildare on Saturday, February 7 from 3.00pm to 4.00pm.
According to the Chairman of the Frank Driver Cumann Eamonn Mahoney, the purpose of the protest is to highlight the danger posed by heroin and other drugs to young people in the estate and in society in general.
“The economic collapse facing the 26-Counties brings with it increased unemployment and rising levels of poverty and marginalisation. One of the consequences will be that more young people may through a feeling of hopelessness turn to drugs such as heroin. We feel it is essential that attention is focused on the crisis facing communities throughout Kildare and nationally. The response to drugs has to be across the board. Communities cannot be left on their own to tackle this problem, a multi agency approach with proper resources and funding is the only way to seriously begin to tackle the culture of drugs for the users, their families and the wider community.” Eamonn Mahoney said.

Celbridge Protest Report
ON SATURDAY the 17th of january the Frank Driver Cumann of Cilldara Sinn Féin Poblachtach held their ant-drug protest as planned in Celbridge, Co. Kildare. Members of Republican Sinn Féin from Kildare and Raheny, Co. Dublin, took part along with ten local Celbridge residents.
It was a crowd of around twenty who ignored strong winds and pouring rain to put our message across to the people of Celbridge and indeed kildare that filthy heroin dealers are selling this dangerous and addictive drug to our kids while increasing the crime rate in our communities. Drug dealings of all kind are a serious problem in kildare and all over Ireland, on our streets and behind closed doors.
We, Republican Sinn Fein, will continue to highlight this problem all over Kildare. We got a great response from passing motorists beeping giving us their support. The protest lasted about sixty minutes, we thank all who attended and everyone for their support on this issue. Our next protest is taking place at rosconnell estate entrance in Newbridge on Febuary, 17th at 3pm sharp.
