Candidate calls for training hub in Athy
REPUBLICAN Sinn Féin candidate for Athy Town Council Des Dalton – who is also Vice President of the Athy Branch of SIPTU- has called for the former Athy swimming pool located at the ‘People’s Park’ to be converted into a training centre.
“The conversion of the former swimming pool would be a practical step to addressing the needs of those who are faced with job loss or redundancy. Such a centre would make Athy a training hub offering a menu of training both long-term and short-term. This development would take us beyond the usual cliché and lip service about offering support to the unemployed and provide a real pathway for those beginning the process of re-entering the workforce.
A training hub in Athy could provide a centre of training excellence for South Kildare. It would also mean people did not have to travel to training centres such as Athlone but access many of the services much closer to home. It is a real opportunity for Kildare Co Council to make a positive contribution to the many real victims of the economic collapse in South Kildare.”
